Minneapolis Art Shanties for The New York Times

Every winter we look forward to Art Shanties that happen here in Minnesota. Normally we go as only spectators but this year was different since we were documenting it for the New York Times. It’s basically like photographing the family-friendly winter version of Burning Man, but this is set on the ice of a frozen lake. It’s one of those assignments where even if you tried you couldn’t make a bad photo.

For winter lovers like us, this winter here in Minneapolis has been anything but exciting with super mild temps and hardly any snow. Despite that, the Art Shanties were able to go for one weekend before being forced to cancel because of the warm weather which made the ice conditions unsafe. We can’t wait to see them back next year with hopefully a lot of snow and ice on the lake!
