Greenfield, Iowa Tornado for The new York Times

We thankfully don’t cover many natural disasters as I’m not sure we’d have the heart and mental toughness to do it on a regular basis. A few frames from down in Greenfield, Iowa where a devastating tornado went straight through the center of town. This assignment was not only emotionally hard as you feel like a big jerk approaching people on by far one of the worst days of their life, but it was also hard to truly capture how devastating this tornado was in a still photo. While we believe in the power of the still image there isn’t a single photo that could capture how truly destructive this tornado was on the small town of Greenfield. It went straight through the heart of the town and despite that it was amazing to see how gracious everyone was and the outpouring of support from the community in coming together to help pick up the pieces. Hopefully, this will be the first and last tornado destruction photos we take for a long time.
