Recently I was commissioned by the German magazine Nido to work on a story about a 5 year old boy named Jalue who is a young lama that will be leaving his home here in Minnesota at age 10 to become a Buddhist monk.
Martina, the photo editor, wanted me to shoot the work in the same way I have shot all my personal work on my Hasselblad. It was incredible to spend a few days making pictures that spoke to me. It was also great to have an editor who wanted me to treat the whole assignment as if it was a personal body of work. The highlight beyond getting to hang out with a cool little guy for a couple days including his first day of kindergarten came when I saw that Nido gave the story a full 7 pages of play.
A few photos and tearsheets with some nice full page photo spreads –
